Design of a Speculative Museum Exhibit Guide: Fifty Years of Medicall
Purpose: Create a speculative design project for a far-off future, using speculative design research techniques and forecasting methods. Address a current challenge in women's health by envisioning a future health care utopia where these issues have been comprehensively addressed.
Research Question: According to research from the Commonwealth Fund in 2021 to 2022, the U.S. had "the lowest life expectancy at birth, the highest death rates for avoidable or treatable conditions, the highest maternal and infant mortality, and among the highest suicide rates." Compared to countries with similar GDP and government structure, the U.S. lags far behind in key health outcomes like these, and is one of the very few countries without universal healthcare in the group.
This design from spring 2023 envisions what could the U.S. could look like if we strove to do better. What would maternal health be like in a future health care utopia, 50 years after comprehensive, progressive health care is ensured for all, especially birthing people?
